I am using Outlook 2000 on my PC which is on a LAN. We have Exchange Server on our server which is used only for routing internal mail.
External mail is sent via our ISP's server and, in general, Exchange should play no part.
It would appear that Outlook somehow validates the outgoing external email addresses and, if it hits an invalid one (presumably where destination server is unreachable), the message will sit in the Outbox for a while then it is eventually sent internally to our Exchange server which (after 24 hours or so) notifies a delivery failure.
The only hint of a problem that is noticeable when the message is sent is that the Norton pop-up does not appear and the message in sent items is shown as being sent 'on behalf of' a different email address (I have about 4 email services configured in Outlook).
The end result is that an email that appears to have been successfully delivered has not and I don't necessarily find out about it until far too late.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
