Invalid attribute/option identifier when registering server in enterpr

We have SQL Server 2000 enterprise manager running on windows XP. Out of three computer 1 can connect to any SQL servers, but the other two cannot connect to an SQL server. When you try to register the server an error comes up saying Invalid attribute/option identifier. Has anyone got any ideas what might solve this. I can not find anything on microsoft's web pages. And from searching the Net a number of people have said reinstall MDAC, which I have done but still no joy.
Any help would be great
