Hi.
I have a wierd problem...
When I try to mail to someone on the Internet using
mail -v you@internet.com I get an 5.5.4 Invalid arguments errorcode.
Even when i mail the local user root who is aliased to an Internet mail adress I get the errorcode.
BUT, when sendmail is mailing the postmaster, whom is aliased to root too, the mail succesfully delivers to my Internet mail adress. Here's the mail.

"The mail protocol was unable to handle one or more requests because they were unrecognized or invalid. Please notify your system administrator."

And in the maillog it says "Stat=Data Format Error"
Please help, and excuse my bad english..

Hi! Frankly, I have just similar problem, when relay mail from gateway to my internal mail hub. It seems like the problem is in sendmail.cf. Anyway, it's been pretty long since you've posted your message, so if you have found out where was a problem, I'd be appriciate for a hint. It seems like I'm gonna die with it...

I had experienced exact the same problem sending emails to users in two domains who used Micro$oft exchange server. All emails to these two domain seems bounce back with "501 5.5.4 Invalid arguments" error, 501 5.6.0 user@the-exchange-
server-owers-domain.com... Data format error. Later discovered there were the broken version around for the exchange server, namely, Version: 5.0.2195.1600, to find out, telnet to the recipient mail server port 24 and see if it is the broken version or not:

Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 5.0.2195.1600 ready at Mon, 4 Jun 2001 00:02:55 -0800

The broken version announces:
250-AUTH GSSAPI NTLM LOGIN
but it doesn't implement the RFC correctly.
