Invalid Argument when Importing

Could someone tell me what is actually going on when you get the Invalid Argument message? I was getting it all of a sudden when trying to import a certian file.I tried it on a backup of the db from 1 month ago and it worked. I replaced the newer version db with the backup, tried the import again and it didn't work. Why?
I did a Compact and Repair on the db and was finally good to go again but I would still like to know what was causing this to begin with.
Anyone?
