Why do I get all the wierd ones?

We tried to add a new user to our server. The exchange mailbox is refusing mail. In the error logs we found a reference to the problem with a link to the internet. It said that we needed to "Force a rebuilding of the recipient update service." But when I try, in system manager... when I expand the "recipients" folder, I am getting an error that says: "An invalid ADSI Path Name was Passed. #80005000"
I can only find references in the Knowledge Base regarding the setup of a new exchange, but ours is in service. Any Ideas?
