The Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) credential proves that you have the skills to successfully implement, manage, and troubleshoot the ongoing needs of Microsoft Windows® 2000–based platforms, including Windows .NET Server.

Thoughts on this, is it worth pursuing?

I think it might be worth it. Until the boot camps push out thousands of certified techs. Other than that yes. I only need 1 test for this and that’s the 70-218—managing a Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Environment. It is not available until January. I think this is a good opportunity for those who have taken 4 of the MCSE tests who are not certified but want something to show for their efforts. Or for anyone who does not want to spend the time and money involved with becoming a full MCSE. This will be a good judge of knowledge for ENTRY LEVEL network techs. Is it a way for MS to get more money? Maybe, but I do this MS has been listening to the cries of how the MSCE is watered down or not a good judge of Network competence. James Collins

I only need 218 too - can you be MCSA as well as MCSE?

As far as I can tell, yes and no.If you use the Windows 2K track you cannot use it for MCSA. Now if you are MCSE in Win2K and take the Windows XP and .net tests as well as electives that are not part of your WIn2K MCSE then yes you can hold both. James Collins

James,
Actually the answer is all yes, you CAN use the 2000 track tests for both as demostrated by this FAQ from microsoft.

Q.I am already an MCSE. Should I consider pursuing the MCSA on Windows 2000 credential?

A. You may want to consider pursuing the MCSA certification if it represents your current responsibilities in systems implementation and management. Depending on the elective exams you have passed, you may need to pass only Exam 70-218: Managing a Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Environment to earn the MCSA certification. Please see the MCSA requirements for details.

Thanks for the info. I did not look at the FAQ. Maybe I should. James Collins
