I have a stand-alone Intraweb application that works when running in Stand-alone mode. When I install it as a service, the application can no longer access files or ODBC Data Sources. I have tried changing the user account from Local System to Administrator, but that has not helped at all. Has anybody seen anything like this before?

TIA!
Rob

I can't say the exact answer but here's a little something.

There are a couple of things that have to be considered here. Local system account doesn't have necessarily enough privileges so you're right when trying to change the account. For example the Local system doesn't see network shares. I think it should see the ODBC though...

Another thing is that you could try to switch "Allow service to interact with desktop" on. If your service tries to show a message or access a menu in the tray you need this one.

I wouldn't use Administrator's account with any service since the Administrator may be different that of the "supreme administrator" that has some Domain access privileges and thus the machine's Administrator doesn't have enough rights. Somebody correct me if i'm wrong with this one. :)

Instead create a new account just for your service applications and give enough rights to that account. Off course when you're creating this account you do have to have enough privileges. If you don't, ask your domain administrator to create an account that has enough privileges.

I hope i'm not looking too far here. ;)

Pikkunero,
That's sort of what I was thinking. Do you know how one can go in and specifically alter the security settings for a Windows XP account? I am thinking that it is somehow done through an MMC plugin or something, but can not locate any specific information on it. I did some googling, but everything was pretty general.

Thanks for your help!
Rob

I'm sorry that i can't help yo with that. I'm not a windows administrator and thus i don't have specific knowledge of this topic. But i solved it so that i asked an administrator to create a new account that is solely for the service. And which also has enough privileges for the service's needs.
