Intranet

I have posted this question in the wrong forum and was advised to post it here :

(i)I can design web pages and publish them to a hosting company.
My next step would be to host my own website on my own computer/server. The purpose is to give everyone in the company access to company documents and to give clients access to our public documents.
I have Windows 2000 with IIS available, but do not know how to set up the intranet and internet.
Can someone please point me in the right direction.

I wish to start an intranet where LAN and WAN users can read/write documents on our company server and also run our programs from where they are.

if you will be using IIS. You can register a domain name, or you may already have one registered you can use. direct your name servers for the domain name to the appropriate IP address of the web site. If the site is internal, you will need to setup the router to direct http traffic to the server that is hosting the website.

Tbanks, but I do not understand fully what you mean. Can you please elaborate a little.
The DNS of our computers are all set for our present internet router - will that be sufficient ? Is the domain name I have to register only an internal one ? How do I direct http traffic ?

You'll have to point external http:/ftp: requests to your
internal website via your router.

You'll also want to set group/role permissions so you don't
have to set so many different permissions for individual
client accounts - just add a specific client to the required group.

I am assuming you have a static IP address, so you'll
either need to register it with a domain name or just
provide the IP address with appropriate port to your
clients.

Not knowing the exact configuration you have, precludes
giving better detail.

You'll probably also want to add some rules to deny all
external http:/ftp:/etc. requests except from a list of
valid endpoints - OR - insure the connections are
authenticated before allowing connections to your internal
website.
(gotta keep the hackers and script-kiddies out :-O)

Whilst I can see that your help is valid I am unfortunately not on a level where I can implement it as I do not have the knowledge. Although I am a programmer I am a newbie in this.
Could you please explain the steps to me in more detail.

give you the appropriate response. As you might expect,
IIS with it's subsequent configuration details can be
quite involved.
