I've recently connected a new computer to our company domain but it will not open the company intranet site. Before the computer was connected to the domain it would open without any problems.

I can map network drives & access all data on the domain, it is just the intranet site that will not open, any ideas?

What do you mean with "no open"? Can you ping the host? Can you access by IP? Any firewall? Which OS version?

Cheers,
Dian

by will not open I mean 'internet explorer cannot desplay the webpage'.

Yes I can ping the host, OS on client is XP Pro SP3, on server it's server 2003 for SBS. Windows firewall has been turned off. I can access the Small business server welcome screen by IP but when I click on the link for the internal company website I again get the 'internet explorer cannot display the webpage' error.

If you can surf by IP, looks like a DNS resolution problem.

I'd try:

- ipconfig /flushdns
- Check hosts file

Cheers,
Dian

should I do this on the client or host & what do you mean by 'host file'

Ok, step by step what I'd do:

- Open a command window (Start > Run > cmd)
- ping <web host name> and check it's returning the correct numerical IP
- If not, type ipconfig /flushdns and try again
- Still no joy: see hosts file in windows/system32/drivers/etc

Cheers,
Dian

the only thing in the host file is the client host address which is the local loopback

Check your TCP/IP settings on the client, what is the DNS set to?

Technically speaking the DNS should be set to the domain controller address.

I'd also check if the intranet address is set as a trusted site in IE's security settings.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

The DNS was set to automatic but I have tried to manually set it to the domain controller without any joy.

Intranet security settings are enabled so it is a trusted site.

I'm pretty sure this is a DNS error but not sure what else to check...

When you ping the host name from command line, the numerical IP is right?

Cheers,
Dian

Yes the IP is correct, I've just manually entered the domain controller ip address into the DNS settings & problem solved, not sure why this didn't work the 1st time I tried it but at least it's sorted.

Thanks for your help
