Our new Human Resources manager is interested in putting together some kind of intranet portal for our employees. He wants to be able to provide company news, an event/holiday calendar, and an easy way to share files between employees, etc.

One thing we really want to provide is an area where employees can download various documents (i.e. insurance enrollment forms/purchase order forms/policy and procedure documents/training materials/etc.) Naturally, file sharing/access would have to be somewhat secure and allow for customizable options (i.e. ready-only/full access, specific directory access permission/denial, directory browsing permission/denial, etc.)

I've been looking for a project that would get me involved with PHP and this seems like a good place to start. Our (off-site) hosting package allows for PHP, so I was thinking of using a "canned" portal system until I learn more about PHP. Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

Here is a list of some portal programs that you might want to consider... I found this list at random sites on the web [some items may not be very helpful, but hopefully the list will give you some ideas]...

@ OP

the functionality you say you need is fairly straightforward. i'd go so far as to say that it represents a good first project for someone wanting to start coding in php. just don't be too ambitious with your first requirement specification.

another excellent package is MS Sharepoint. By suggesting this in a PHP forum, I may be asking for doom, but it is a quality package.

Several benefits-
-Integrated with your windows 2003 server network. Users are already set up with permissions and .NET takes care of that for you on the site
-Fully extensible
-Built for intranet applications
-Lots of plugins/downloads available
-Comes free with Win2003 Server and easy to implement
-Can even link a shared calendar on the site with Outlook and other MS product interconnectivity

Downsides-
-Not open source
-A little bit of a learning curve: because it's so open-ended, you might get stuck trying to figure out what to do with it
-You might not like .NET if you're a PHP coder. VERY different style

just some food for thought...
