I am running an Apache machine on my network at work, which is run on exchange server. Apache is not meant to do anything except host internal php-based projects and allow access to MySQL.

Currently, I have to type the address of the machine everytime (172.24.4.151) I want to access it via a web browser. I want to be able to enter dbserver.smp or something similar. How can this be done?

I tried with Virtual Hosts, but it doesn't work when I type the name into the web browser. Is this because there is no main domain set?

Thanks. Sean.

Apache shouldn't care unless you are using name-based virtual hosts. Does dbserver.smp "or something similar" resolve to the servers address?

No, is it because I do not have a separate DNS running? Or perhaps because our Active Directory has a DNS running?

I tried editing the etc/hosts file in Windows but that didn't even work (even though it would have only been limited to my machine).

Sean.

If you add "server_ip dbserver.smp" to Windows' hosts file, you should be able to ping "dbserver.smp" successfully. There may be another issue if even this doesn't work.

For everyone else, you need to add the server's hostname to your DNS, whatever it is.

I am sorry, let em backstep a bit. When I changed the hosts file, I was able to ping the other computer using the name. But it wouldn't work in a web browser.

Thanks. Sean.

You could try "ipconfig /flushdns", and close/restart the browser. Also try adding the same hosts entry on the server.
