Hello,

I have a small retail store and am using intuit pos. I have many problems with dropped connections, failure of the pos to sync with quickbooks, card reader unable to read cards etc...

Inuit tells me it is a firewall problem and I should not use one! They had my wife uninstall Norton today - I have refused this advice in the past but was not there today.

How do you folks handle security, anti-virus apps and firewalls? Do you use them?

Thanks,

With the software solutions we offer, we turn off the windows firewall and everytime a customer calls in with firewall problems, we turn off whatever they installed and move on. Firewall only needs to be between you and the outside world. A router accomplishes this just fine. The problem with Norton and some other biggies, is that they want to control all network traffic, and for softwares that run across networks, it tries to check and validate all that info which bogs it down until it stops it. Just utilize the firewall built into a router and install a simple antivirus program like AVG on your computers.
Or call Norton and get their advice for a work around.

Unfortunately, Firewalls and POS software don't play too well together (and sometimes ant-virus too).

While no system is full proof, generally a router is enough to keep the bad guys away. If want to get technical, there is likely a way to configure your firewall to allow traffic from the ports your Intuit needs to use. But it's probably more of a headache than it's worth.
