I accept that this may not strictly be the forum for asking this question but I'm not sure where else to look.

I am investigating errors on a customer site and am not sure how to interpret the different errors. I am aware that, for example, 404 errors could crop up simply because a visitor has mis-typed a URL. I have also learned to worry when I see 500 (internal server) errors.

However, the logs also contain error codes 400, 403 & 406 and I'm not sure whether I can control these in any way or whether they could be triggered by malicious or erroneous visitor actions. Descriptions of the codes (Bad Request, Forbidden, Not acceptable) don't really offer that much help.

Any help would be appreciated.

This link has plenty of good information on http codes. 403 Usually means someone tried to access a password protected area of the site and failed. I think a 406 can be caused by a client telling the server it only accepts certain content-types, and the server wanting to give a response content-type not in that list. I hope this helps.

OK that's a help thank you.

I'll try to see if I can work out why these errors are cropping up.
