Does anyone know how to create a web site to test an internet connection? Something similar to toast.net. We would like to place a server at the edge of our network to check dsl speeds before they hit our backbone and go out. Perhaps something could be done in apache. Thanks

My understanding of how those "speed tests" work, is that they have a large file which they download to the client, and measure how long it took.

It wouldn't be too hard to work that one out.....

When they click the submit button to test, cookie the time they clicked it. Then, when the page is finished loading, look at the cookie, see how many seconds it took, divide that into the size of the file.....

Make sure you turn off the cache, so that it downloads the "big file" every time it runs.

Just my 2¢

What is the "edge of our network" ? Is there a centre point (in relation to your download/upload speed) ?

Your switch/hub/router (that connects to the net) will be the best judge of your upload/download speed. Any "external" test will be polluted by external download/upload speeds.

For example, your connection may be capable of uploading 3 Mb a second - but if your "test" line is only capable of downloading 512 Kb a second - its not really going to tell you your upload speed is it ?
