Hello,

We have got two ISPs at work (I am a technician that works in a large college), each one has a 2mb link. However ISP 1 has got a firewall and a lot of other restrictions. ISP 2 was installed by the goverment and is hardly ever used. The only problem is that it is on another subnet so I cannot use it unless I change all of my IP settings, which in turn disables me from our netware network.

network 1 is on a 172.16.x.x (255.255.0.0)network with internal DNS and proxy.

network 2 is :
IP of test computer 10.20.200.5
Subnet 255.255.255.0
DG 10.20.210.1
DNS 211.249.152.16

I have put the details of network 2 into my computer as a test to see if I can browse the internet without any restrictions and it works fine. However I can now no longer use our network as I am on different subnet.

Ideally, I would like to use the network and simply use network 2 for internet access.

I have tried putting the DG of network 2 into the properties of network 1 but to no avail.

Any ideas how I can achieve this.

I was thinking that maybe I need to create some sort of static route to say, "if internet is needed then use these details?"
I have no experience with routing and nobody here does either!

Thanks in advance

Micky

The Line is connected to a router in the building I assume? Would it not be possible to change the network settings of this router to match your main network?

I have just completed this same scenario at work. and the answer is drum roll please!!!!!!!

LINUX :)

What i did was to install a linux server with 1 nic on each of my 3 networks 1 for LAN 1 for ISP1 and 1 for ISP2 i then set up load balacing etc using ip route (dont be daunted this is very easy to do)

the final step was to enable firewalling i did this using iptable/shorewall.

and voila 1 network using 2 natted ips. once you have the basic up and running you can use both IP ranges for static 1 to 1 nats if you need to put machines on public ip's for servers etc.

The guides i used are

and
took about 2hrs all in to get up and running. works like a charm though. :)

The routers are managed and we do not have access.

I will give the linux thing a bash

thanks

Actually, I have just been browsing TCP/IP properties and noticed that there is a button for alternative configuration. How does this work?

If I put my other network settings in, could I switch between networks maybe?

Thanks in advance.

Micky

Both my routers are managed also just take and ip out of each range to use in the linux server.

You can add extra ips to each nic you can have as many as you need but

1) you need to mess around with a lot of manual routing
2) each pc then needs to be firewalled in its own right
3) see number 1 :)

the problem arises in that nic1 has 2 external ips but 1 deafult gateway it takes alot of iffdling with routes and metircs to get to work.

easiset option for me was linux windows xp and multiple subnets is a mare :)
