I get this pop up thats titled "message service" about every 10 minutes even when I'm not on line. Its tell me that it has my ip address which not surprising but its annouying. The pop up is an add to download a program that stops pop ups. (the ironie thing is that its trying to have my get a program to stop pop ups). But how is it poping up when I'm not on-line......

Its some type of timed application. You probably downloaded something like Kazaa or Gator or something. It is a program running on your computer, that pops up an advertisement every few minutes.

disable it in your start-up programs through msconfig. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

Messenger service is a service that is part of Windows XP. It allows messages to be sent to other computers. Unfortunately, spammers have capitalized on this feature. Your choices are to disable Messenger Service or set up a firewall (even xp's built-in firewall is sufficient to stop this).

You should also look at getting a hosts list that blocks popups. You replace the hosts. file in your %systemroot%/system32/drivers/etc/ folder (for Windows users.)

Go to They've got a free "hosts" file you can download. It's worked great for me. -----
