The fool I am, I typed the wrong password into the setup screen when I setup an existing ISP when I installed XP. Whenever I go to try to correct it through the Internet Options dialog box, it always reverts to the incorrect version I first typed. I can delete the password altogether but that means I have to type it each time I connect. How do I overcome this 'memory' that XP seems to have of the wrong password?

Open the Network Connections folder and just delete that connection and then set it up again with the correct password.

I did try setting up a new connection to solve the problem but strangely this didn't work either. I'll give it another go though.
Thanks for your reply though

No, its no use.
Every time I delete the old connection and setup a new one using I get the incorrect password being saved.
It doesn't seem to matter whether I click on the password box where it says 'click here to change password' because as soon as I close this screen and dial up, all I get is the wrong password coming up.
It really seems as though XP is saving the wrong password somewhere and it substitutes this for my connection each time I re set it.
There must be a password list somewhere where I can reset this.

Hope someone can help.

You can try Doug's registry fix and see if it works for you.

"This problem crops up in Windows XP a lot. This is caused by corruption of 1 or both of the 2 relavent Registry branches that affect this behavior.

Close all open IE/Outlook/Outlook Express windows. Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Go to:

HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider

Right click on the Protected Storage System Provider subkey and select Export. This creates a backup REG file that can be re-imported by double clicking on it. Next, right click on the Protected Storage System Provider subkey and select Delete. Try IE or Outlook and see if it either will retain your password. If so, then you're set. If not, delete the Protected Storage System Provider subkey again and then
repeat the above steps for:

HKEY CURRENT USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms\SPW

And try IE/Outlook again."

Thanks for the help guys.

I still cant get the old password out of the system. I don't think the password for internet connections is stored on the registry subkeys I deleted. I've searched MS knowledge base and the dougknox site but cant find an answer yet.

Any more ideas?

Cheers Keith

Re-installing and Repairing Internet Explorer 6.

You can try the following which has worked for some people.

To Reinstall IE6:

1) Insert the Win XP CD

2) Open Start / Run and type:
rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

Press ENTER

If the above doesn't work have a look at the following.

Microsoft has posted a generic registry-edit workaround at

But users report that the Microsoft-sanctioned technique doesn't always work, and have found other workarounds. You'll have to do some poking around among the results returned by this link in order to find a solution that matches your specific situation (there's no universal
answer, alas).
