Our domino server has a private IP address and we send and receive our mails through an ISP. The ISP says a lot of spam and viruses come from the network and they want to stop it and hence are going to use authentication rather than relay. What this means for us is that the ISP wants us to set up a user account for them on the Linus server running the domino.

They claim the alternative is for us to have a public IP and send and receive directly.

We think it is not safe since it gives the ISP an opportunity to get into our system and do whatever they like such as read our mails.

Do you think it is safe? Can we give them limited access which won't and not suffer, or should we just have a public IP.

Thanks
George

Hi

A public IP would be the way to, maybe you should pass your mail to mailsweeper in a DMZ to clean viruses and cut down on spam etc.
Your ISP can already read all your emails which travese the internet as they are in clear text unless they are encrpyted anyway. I am not suggesting you give anyone access to your domino server however. If your ISP give you grief than take your business elsewhere.
There are also professional companies who you can point your mail server to who will offer virus\spam protection at a worlds best standard.

Good luck,

David
