I have posted on variuous forums from my job computer. When I go out to the net thru the job computer I know that my address in natted into a CIDR class address. The forums I posted on logs the IP of the machine that the message is coming from. My question is, is it possible for someone to track my postings back to my place of employment? What tools or service would a person use to track the ip back to my job computer?

Try this...

trace route (dos command tracert 11.11.11.11 or tracert www.website.com)

It maps the route between you and the IP address you enter... some programs (e.g. Neotrace) also display a visual map, which can show a rough impression of physical location.

Also, if someone knows your IP address, they can work out which ISP it's been assigned to, and sometimes by deduction which part of the world you're in (e.g. Eclipse Internet services Devon & Cornwall, UK). By using tracert, it can indicate the IP of the modem / router at your ISP's end; sometimes this gives geographical information away aswell.

to add.

records of IP leases are stored in DHCP log files and can be accessed. however who is requesting that info (government, hacker) would need good reason to receive it. yes, IP addresses are public info and everyone can get your IP info but that don't mean they can recieve this from past logs.

also, even if your work pc is in a NAT environment your router's public IP will be caught. therefore they will know where you are but what workstation (unless they got to your admin for help). "Jack of all trades. Master of none."
