There are tools out there that will help you, but it sounds like you need some assistance with them. Google Spybot Search & Destroy and HijackThis. This isn't an appropriate forum for helping you with this issue.

Can Windows Media Player be considered a hijack-ware? I have tried to get rid of it by Add/remove windows components, and supposedly successful. Every time I fire up IE, one quarter of the screen is masked by the WMP.
Anyone knows how to get rid of that default behaviour?

Have a look at your Startup settings and remove WMP, or the file being opened by WMP, from wherever it may be appearing.

Something like this might help you?

WMP is inbuilt into Windows as such it can not easily be removed. If you have another player you may make that the default player for various file types after unchecking the file types in WMP.

I think the Add or Remove/ Windows Components only removes or adds Start Menu and Quick Launch icons for WMP.

It is spyware most likely! Some of those sites allow you to uninstall them! Just look around on the site and you shall find help or uninstall! :)

Linney,
Actually, yes, the strip that appears on the left, and takes about 20-25% of the screen, and requires me to deactivate it every time I fire up IE. I don't even hook up speakers on my computer. Someone used the computer to see the tsunami related videos and installed WMP.
I am looking for a way to uninstall it, or at least to deactivate the bar on a permanent basis.

It's unlikely that any one installed WMP as that is part and parcel of XP and loaded at setup. It is possible to update any installed version to a later version however.

Turn off IE's Media Bar.

This built-in multimedia player pops open on the left-hand side of IE and allows you to listen to or watch Web media while continuing to surf other pages in the main browser window. Go to Tools > Internet Options, click the Advanced tab in the dialog box that opens, then scroll down the list to the Multimedia section. Find "Don't display online media content in the media bar" and make sure it's checked.

Thank you. It worked marvelously. The Media bar is now turned off according to your instructions, and the most annoying part of my problem is solved.

A follow-up question: is it possible at all to REMOVE WMP completely? The bar does not display does not assure me that it does not work in the background and send all sorts of information without my knowledge.

If you have a third party firewall you can place WMP in any category (eg. Not Trusted) that may prevent its access to the Internet.

In WMP click on Tools/ Options and see what settings you can set under the tabs(4), Player, Security, Networking and Privacy.

I do not currently have a third-party firewall, but I will consider putting up one.
I will explore Forum760 concerning the Virus/Spyware discussions. I have learned a lot with a brief visit already. Thanks Micker377.
