I have been working on this system for some time and finally fixed a pagefile prob. Now that I can get the system up, IE fails to start. As soon as it starts to launch, the process is killed. I have ran three different spyware programs and all is now clean. I was very infested before the scans. I turned the firewall off, pop up blocker but still nothing. Nothing iin the error log.

Help!! My daughter needs this PC for college.

Question: do you have an issue with any other Windows .EXE file?

Question: or desktop icon?

If so, do a repair reinstallation of XP. If you cannot access the internet from IE and have no other browser choice, do the repair. It will not lose installed programs or data, but it will revert your service pack level and hotfixes:
If Start, Run, iexplore.exe does not launch the IE browser, and you have no other browser option installed, the following will make little sense:

If you are patient you can work through faq608-4650
For the impatient:

. download, install, update, and run Giant Antispyware:
. follow with both a Trend Micro and Panda online scan:

Bill,

Only problem (so far) is with IE. From the desktop icon or from Start>Programs. It just closes right after it starts to execute. This also happens with any .htm, .html file even while off line. I changed the home page but same results. It just bombs!!

I will try your suggestions first, then I will try to reinstall IE and then Netscape. This is all turning into a major time consuming and patience issue.

Thanks once again

Scary.

Rename a copy of iexplore.exe to vicbear13.exe and try to execute that.

Look in c:\windows\program files\Internet Explorer

There are some new and very nasty malwares out there at the moment.

I really think when the XMAS Holiday season starts it will be a really big mess.

faq608-4650 can help

The wonderful Doug Knox has some things you might need:

. restore the file association for .EXE, .LNK and other file types:

And make sure you have a good backup. I was hit with something a week ago that was far more difficult and tedious to remove than you can even begin to imagine.

. emergency repair of your regedit, msconfig & task manager

Another possibility is it is a add in that is causing the problem.

If you have Service Pack 2 Installed you can try disabling the add-ins and seeing if that helps.

Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs Tab > Manage Add-Ons Button > Highlight each entry in turn and set to disabled > Click OK

Now try and open IE.
