I am running XP home. I repeatedly get the message 'Internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close'. More information gives:

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: shell32.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2800.1233 Offset: 00095f7c

I have tried uninstalling/ reinstalling/ rebooting, but this makes no difference. I have also followed advice to run the cwshredder utility, but this makes no difference.

I cannot resolve the problem by upgrading to IE6 SP1 because when I try to do so, I get the message, "the software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP". I have followed a recommendation to remove XP hotfix KB823559 to get around this barrier to upgrade, but it makes no difference.

Trying to revert back to IE5.5 doesn't seem to help either.

For info, I had the LOP parasite at one point but used Adaware to remove it. Internet Explorer seemed ok for a while after that. Then all of a sudden it stopped working.

Thanks, but none of these are relevant. The error is not an invalid page fault, and I am running iexplorer directly from the .exe, not from the shortcut.

My pc is not a compaq - it is a multivision Athlon XP 1500.

The logo testing issue is handled here:
Suggestion 1
==========
This problem can occur if the hotfix installer was referencing:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log and the file was corrupt. Either renaming C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log or renaming the entire C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2 folder will allow the hotfix install to complete normally.

Suggestion 2
============
Register the following system files.

1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. Type "regsvr32 licdll.dll" (without quotes).
3. Click "OK."
4. Type "regsvr32 regwizc.dll" (without quotes).
5. CLick "OK."

Suggestion 3
============
This problem can also occur if the Cryptographic Services have been disabled.To resolve this problem:
1. Click "Start," and then click "Run."
2. Type "Services.msc" (without quotes).
3. Double-click "Cryptographic Services." If the service has been disabled, enable it.
4. Attempt to download and install Windows Updates again, and then check to see if the problem is resolved.

Suggestion 4
============
The symptom can occur if the "Microsoft Root Authority" certificate or the "NOLIABILITY ACCEPTED, (c)97 VeriSign, Inc." certificate under Trusted Root Certification Authorities has been removed. On another computer that has the Microsoft Root Authority certificate installed, do the following:
1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Contents."
4. Click "Certificates."
5. Click "Trusted Root Certification Authorities."
6. Scroll down until you locate Microsoft Root Authority certificate.
7. Click "Export."
8. Follow the prompts to export the certificate to "DER encoded Binary x.509(.CER)file." On the computer that cannot install the update, follow the steps to import the certificate you saved.

My own notes suggest that you had your Antivirus software active while applying the newer security Hotfixes for IE. This can lead to the result you have.

Disable your antivirus software, and use Method #2 from here:
And a direct download instructions from Dan Petri's site:

I tried all but suggestion 4 and none worked. I started applying suggestion 4. but during step 8 it prompted for a file, which I didn't know how to resolve.

How could I determine whether either of the certificates has been removed, and hence whether suggestion 4 is relevant?

Please note that upgrade in 6sp1 is the secondary solution (which may not fix the problem even if I can get it to work) and the primary goal is to get the current version of iexplorer working.

I'm having a similar problem with IE 6 SP1 - my error is almost always in kernel.dll but the overall error message is the same as this one.

Microsoft's web site can't help, there are no updates available and I'm stumped.

Ideas and suggestions appreciated.

Tnx in advance.

Tom

This is almost always due to malware.
Follow the steps in faq608-4650

Thinking about it after reading your answer, I think I know what happened. When my new Dell was purchased it came with McAfee 'stuff' on it. I figured I'd try it and it seemed to work OK until the trial period expired. By then I'd heard enough horror stories at work that I decided to go with CA's product instead so I let all McAfee expire. That's when my problems seemed to start - at one point, before I physically uninstalled everything I could find that was related to McAfee, it wiped out all of my email clients (personal and home business alike). This problem occurred for the first time during that period of time and, although everything else is better, this hangs on.

Anyway, I'll give this a shot and post here afterwards.

Thanks!

Tom
