I've recently started getting a problem with IE6 Sp1 operating on a XP sp2 system. On a webpage some links work others don't. My anti-virus is up to date. Security is set to low. The problem happens regardless of whether the firewall is on or not. Anybody got any clues

Have you thought about updating IE to an SP2 version? The version I have installed is 6.0.2900.2180.xsp2_SP2_gdr_050301_1510.

Internet Explorer Fix

Do you have any software or settings that is disabling JavaScript?

Have you tried cleaning out your Temporary Internet Files?

Sorry checked the version and it is Sp2 but still the problems. Temp files clean. No Java settings.

Try temporarily switching off your virus scanner and see if that gives access to the link.

Post an example link that is a problem, others may or may not have problems connecting to it.

Work through some of the ideas in these links.

Make sure your options in IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced are correct.

Uncheck the boxes for "Install on Demand" for IE and Other programs (two boxes).

Try running temporarily with the third box "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" unchecked and see how this goes.

"This specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off."

If that stops your errors, you will know where the trouble is.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Internet Explorer.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Try this...

Start>Run

and enter: regsvr32 urlmon.dll

This fixes a problem i see many times where when a customer opens a new link, it opens a blank window...

Worth a go.

Tried all these and no luck. Narrowed it down to Java scripts but all settings appear ok. Anyone else got any ideas

Update to the newest version of Java.

If that fails, update to an old version of Java by doing a google search for "Old Version Java"

As linney suggested, post some of the links you are having trouble with.

Do you have any software or settings that is disabling JavaScript? Firewall for example?

Think I traced what caused the problem Microsoft Visual studio. I'm pretty sure all this started round about when I installed this. but uninstalling hasn't helped.

As you have moved the goal posts by uninstalling the Microsoft Visual Studio, it might be worthwhile to try again some of the suggestions from earlier in the post to see if they now provide a solution.

Have you checked this problem out as another user in case your original user profile has been corrupted?
