I am struggling with a problem on a client's computer. It is running Windows 98 SE and has Norton Antivirus 2002 Profeesional. The virus definitions are up to date and there are no viruses. The problem. She brought her computer in and on boot up, I got a BSOD. Fatal Exception OE at 0028:C031A2A9 VxD NAVAP(02)+003DE65. I hit the any key (haha) and got a second BSOD: this one at 0028:C02A20CC in VxD VWIN32(05)+00000BF4. Any key brought up another BSOD but someone hit the any key before I could see it. The computer stopped responding at that point. I rebooted in safe mode and, on another computer, I searched the errors. I found a reference to the VWIN32 error, regarding a NIC. I removed the NIC from Device Manager and checked the startup in msconfig. Rebooted and got no BSOD's, but computer froze after getting the cloud background and reloading the NIC. I rebooted in safe mode again and checked Norton Antivirus. Auto-Protect Off, Email Scanning Error, and Automatic Live Update Off. I enabled Auto Update but when I tried to enable Auto-Protect, I got an Internet Explorer Script Error. Line 896 Char 5. I have seen numerous Script Errors in NAV 2002 but never this one and I need to get the client's computer back to her tomorrow. Any suggestions?

Have you tried totally uninstalling NAV, rebooting Windows twice to get a good registry backup, then try installing NAV again? I would suggest doing the full uninstall, then reinstall to see if that fixes it.

OK. Update. Removed NAV with RNAV and rebooted. No problems at all. Reinstalled and got same problem. Uninstalled again and rebooted 3 times. Installed Norton 2002 standard and booted fine. Configured the options and ran Live Update. Rebooted and got to the cloud background and sat there.

Maybe your next step should be to unistall NAV again, reboot, install the newest version of Internet Explorer from windows update, then try it again. It it still fails, I'm betting Norton is leaving crap in the registry even after it is unistalled. You should probably run a regcleaner like Ashampoo after you uninstall NAV, then reinstall.

If none of that works, I'd be looking at a different AntiVirus program, unless you want to format the machine and start fresh.

Removed every hint of NAV from registry and installed again. No luck. Back to the BSOD's again. Trying NAV 2001.
