Hello
Is anyone able to help out as I have an Internet Explorer problem?

The version of I.E. is Version 6.0.2800.1106

The problem I have is that I cannot seem to set my homepage to my desired one.

I have tried setting under Internet options to my desired homepage but everytime I close the browser, it keeps defaulting to this website - about:blank

Another popup also follows immediately with promotional infos such Adware, Spyware tools etc.

I also tried run regedit under start and tried deleting suspicious items but still to no avail.

Please kindly help out as this is turning into a hassle and nightmare.

Thanks very much.

Kind Regards,

Lagoon1.

About:blank is malware. Unfortunately it is somewhat difficult to remove.

about:buster focuses only on this problem:

Follow that with the steps outlined in faq608-4650 particularly running a current copy of CWS -- Cool Web Shredder (discussed in the FAQ).

Hi bcastner
Thank you so much for your reply.

I have tried all the above but still to no avail.

Any more thoughts?

Thanks very much and Hope to hear from you soon.

Kind Regards,

Lagoon1

Just go onto google and type in "about:blank" and several things will open. This thing was the hardest to get removed. I ran CWShredder, Spybot, and Ad-aware all back to back 3 times before I got rid of the about:blank and then another one slipped right in. Good Luck

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

I would say just run the new version of Adware SE Professional. it works and gets rid of most of the spyware.. it does sound like that it's a spyware problem. so I would say to run SE personal or professionsl to fix the problem

Hi Lagoon1

The advice from DestinysDream is excellent
Just go onto google and type in "about:blank"

Basically, all the advice boils down to:

1. Disable System Restore
2. Update and run AboutBuster at least twice
3. Run HijackThis, SpyBot, AdAware SE
4. Reboot and Enable System Restore
5. Turn on your Firewall
6. Download and install FireFox
7. Remove IExplorer from your Desktop and Start Menu, only to be used in extreme emergencies where the Webmaster insists on its use.

Any time you are forced to use IExplorer, scrub your PC again.

8. Every so often, check your Windows\system32\ and windows\windows\ directories for recently-created files named ?????.dll - 5 random letters followed by .dll. Hover over the name, and if it doesn't provide a Company name, assume it's bad. If you find any, turn off System Restore, then delete them.

Good Luck!

This little nasty has been causing us major bother...

removal tips

1) disable system restore
2) download and run cwshredder
3) reboot into safe mode and delete temp files for all users.
4) run hijack this and remove all references to se.dll

reboot

run steps 2 & 3 again

What sort of lines do you see in the R lines in a hijackthis log?

Ones that include numbers?
Or ones that include temp sp or se.dll?
Or navigation failure?
Or what?
