internet explorer, norton, and system restore

Have an xp pro computer with sp1. worked fine at noon. Around 3pm tried to get on internet and got pop up message that Internet explorer cannot download from site. Hit okay and IE closes.

Go to Internet Properties and the Genera, privacy, and content tabs are gone.

Go to Norton AV 2003 and the window opens but it is blank. Just a white background.

Go to System restore and I get a blank window with a white background.

Downloaded Mcafee Stinger on another machine. No virus found.

Download Adware SE and latest ref file. Finds 25 items. But does not fix problem even after reboot.

Even in safe mode can not access IE, Norton, or System Restore.

Investigated every process running and all seem legit.

When a connection goes, first two things I always suggest to look at are the hosts file-some trojans or worms will put a lot of av site redirects there, and lspfix at cexx.org.

If adaware and spybot don't work properly in regular mode, try safe mode. It may not fix your issue, but it sometimes gives them a better chance to do their thing.
