I am not sure what happened but I know I didn't change any settings but now when I go to download a file, I do no longer get a prompt whether I want to open or download, it just opens the file in the Internet Explorer window. How do I change this? I have the prompt to download option enabled under the security tab. What else could it be?

It only seems to do it with the word document I try to download. If I download an excel file, it prompts me to open or save

As you've discovered, this behavior is file type dependant. For word documents (.doc files), open Windows Explorer (not internet explorer), Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab. Scroll to .doc, click to select, and then click the Advanced button. Put a check in the 'confirm open after download' option.
