Internet Explorer Keep Locking Up in Win/98

I have just installed on a new harddrive, Win/98 and the Internet Explorer version is 5.5.
Each time I try and upgrade the version to 6.0 and the 6.1 and I reboot all I get is lockups. Also Media Player locks up all the time.
Any suggestions as to what to do to get rid of the lock ups.

I installed the google help bar a while back.
It seemed to cause the odd lock and browsing
really annoying. It would just freeze then
continue after a minute.
If you do have it then unistall it. Newer
versions might have fixed this little glitch.

So does IE6 install all the way or no? Exactly when do the lockups occur?
