Internet Explorer - Java applets wont work

Hello ,
I am using IE5.5 and went I go to websites that have java applets, the sites tell me I don't have java enabled. I use to have IE4 and I installed IE5.5 on top of it. Later, my system crash and when I got it back up I just installed IE5.5. Is it possible that IE4 has the built in java feature that I need or is there a way to get java working on IE5.5 ? Help!

The JAVA settings are under INTERNET OPTIONS - SECURITY. Select the Internet Zone (I assume it is an Internet Site) and then review your security settings for JAVA to see if it is enabled.

Hello , and thx for your input. I went to "internet options" and slected the "security" tab and then set it to "internet " mode. I still get the statement " your browser doesn't support Java". Any replies appreciated. Thanks

After getting to Security and clicking on Internet, go into custom level and see where the Java permissions settings are and set them accordingly. Your's probably has the radio button set to "disable Java", mine is set to high safety. ggebhart@clover.net

Again thx for the reply. I did what you said to do, but still it's not working. But, this time when I went to a web site with java applets it said that I need the "microsoft virtual machine". I went to Microsoft's website and seen Microsoft Virtual machine , build 3805. On their site they say that once it is installed , it can't be uninstalled.
Is this the only way that I'll be able to get java applets working on my machine? Or is there a better way? Any problems with the MVM ? Thx you .....please reply

Try running the

Tools
Windows update

Any critical updates will be there for you to download according to your machine setup since I'm not sure what version of Windows you are using.

First you can see what version of VM you are using. Open a DOS or CMD prompt and type in the command JVIEW and press enter.

With all current versions of VM Microsoft says they can't be uninstalled. joegz

Hello and thx...... I am running Win95 and I went into Dos and typed JVIEW and the version number is 4.79.1515.
I also had went to Microsoft's website and found the virtual machine for my unit. But , I was wondering if I should reinstall IE4 and reinstall 5.5 over it or just download the virtual machine on my system. Once there Microsoft says that it can't be uninstalled. I heard something to the effect that Microsoft is trying to do away with java..........................

Microsoft has removed support for Sun's JAVA only in IE6. They won't remove the Java Virtual Machine because that is their own version of Java.

I would just download a more recent version of JAVA VM since that is a really old build you have. They have several flavors to choose from in their download section under the product virtual machine.

If you are still concerned about the not being able to uninstall message you can download at least build 3194 which still can be manually uninstalled. joegz

Thanks for the replies :) I have no problems with putting MVM on my system. But, if I ever want to uninstall it I guess I would have to reinstall win95 , right? Do you think it would be a good idea to install the lastest model? And have you heard whether or not it causes problems with other browsers? Like Opera? thx...........

Until now my Java applets worked with some problems so I decided to download Microsoft Virtual Machine and my java applets stop working altogether

I found this site :

and downloaded the Sun version for Java.

With this software my Java applets are faster than ever and I am able to get more applets than before. The website that allowed me only 2 applets ; I can get 5 or more from them. Quite a difference

No need to remove the MVM

I went to the MVM link on the Microsoft web site, which now reads, "The Microsoft VM update for Windows is no longer available at this site."

Does anyone know where I can acquire a copy of MVM build 3805?

goto java.sun.com and download the sun java runtime from there. I am using it on Windows XP Pro with no problems. Also it is free.

I have problems downloading Java Applets to my PC from my bank. I have the latest JVM installed, I have enabled and disabled JIT compiler, no joy. Any other settings I can check?

Hello The Rock,

Go to Tools > Internet Options > Security and check the settings in the Internet zone. When Internet is selected, if it shows "High", try "Medium". If it shows Custom, click on the "Custom Level" button and scroll down to the Java entries. There are more than one so check them all. Make sure they are enabled.

A million thanks to rayaur. I've been ripping out what's left of my hair trying to fix my java applets problem for weeks. I went to the Sun site and KABLAM, my problem was fixed!!!

I spoke too soon. The program loaded perfectly, but I still can't open java applets. I have I.E. 6.0 and Windows 98

I have windows XP prof, and i have IE 6, i installed sun java and i went to test it, so i went to yahoo games, and played one and it worked, but there is a site that i went to that uses java but when i try to go there, all i get is a red "X", and i cant figure out why...can you help please?
