What causes this, and what can I do to fix it ?

- Windows 98 SE has already been re-installed (after erasing the hard drive first).
- I have already made sure Norton Anti-Virus is up-to-date, and that the computer contains no virus.
- I have already used AdAware 6.0 to check for advertising and/or spyware programs.
- I have already disabled the option 'enable 3rd party browser extensions' in the Internet Explorer settings.
- I have already downloaded and installed all available Windows updates and Internet Explorer updates from - I have already replaced the RAM memory module in this computer.

All other software on this computer functions without _ANY_ error messages. Errors only occur with Internet Explorer.

I have searched the support knowlege base at but have not found any documentation that has helped to resolve this issue.

I am very frustrated by this, as I have been trying to fix it for a couple of months now and have had zero success. The fact that this error is completely random, and that I have not found any way to cause it to repeat reliably makes it even more dificult to troubleshoot.

Any assistance with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Are you using a Firewall? Do you have anything that sets "Proxy" settings? Run a program called CWShredder.

The computer is not running any software firewall, but the network has a hardware firewall in operation.
