Internet explorer delay in keystrokes/Response time delay 5-10 secs 1

I am using Windows Me with IE 5.5.
It is kind of weird, when I log into the internet It goes on a slow mode and the response is a delay of about 5 to 10 seconds. (example: filling in names or zip code... I type then 5 second later you will see the actual typing...)
But if I go to type the address

http://www.whatever.com

it works fine.
Even scrolling up or down it is very slow.
It happens only in IE, If I go to outlook or any other application I had no problem.
I even upgraded to IE 6, I am still having the same problem.
Any idea....? Please help

How about starting the comptr in the Safe Mode (keep tapping the F5 key as Windows boots), disable any screen saver and go to Programs, Accessories, Systems Tools and run the Disk Cleanup, Scan Disk and Disk Defragmenter.

I think your theory would have applied if this was happening to all the program in the computer.
However I checked and there are no programs running on the backgourd.

The disk cleanup, scan disk and disk defrag should be run on a regular basis anyway. It cleans up windows.

Have you tried the Repair function for IE? Go to the ADD/Remove Programs and scroll down to the Microsoft Internet Explorer and click to Remove. You should then get the choice to Remove, or Repair IE.

What type of Modem do you have. The external Cable and DSL Modems need to be rebooted every so often. Just unplug it from the comptr and power supply for 1 min, then reconnect and restart.

It sounds like you may also have some spyware programs running in the background. You can get a free spyware detection and removal tool from

called AdAware. It works great. When you download it, be sure to get the available updates before you run it for the first time. It will save you a rescan.

I am having the exact same problesm (windows 98 IE 6.0 reformatted hard drive scaned disk, virus scan, defragged,cable modem. I've done all suggested. Still having the same problems. Did anyone solve this yet? it has taken a half an hour to post this so sorry for the errors.

Thanks for the reply, however, when checking my speeds and pings with my cable ISP I am within noraml ranges, even faster in some cases. This problem is discussed widely on Microsoft discussion baords, but since I can not view them in any normal time of viewing , I can not scroll thru all 312 posts. Nor have I been able to fix it. Microsoft does not seem to have any interest in the problem or anything in the same language(simple enlgish-nontech speak) that I can figure out. As I said in my 1st post I HAVE treid all of the usual fixes security patches and upgrades, scans and cleaning. I expected more expert advcie from this site. I guess it is time to reformat the entire hard drive. unless I can find a fix

I had this problem resolved once.
Someone said that this has to do with Java, because my internet is slow only when java written code are within the webpage. It is just a thought....

You can also try to go to tools, internet option and disable Java.
Your java dll might be corrupted.

I had this exact same issue that you are talking about just a few days ago. For those who don't know, it has nothing to do with Internet speed, defragging or scanning the hard drive. I am thinking that it might have to do with the java.dll being corrupt.

You see I reinstalled WinME and the version of IE I got was 5.5. Everytime I tried to type in a text input form, I would get this really slow response (just like you described). So I eventually upgraded to IE 6 sp 1. And then the problem went away. But this isn't necessarily a good thing. Because now the MS JVM is completely disabled for me. I have installed the Sun JVM, but it is too new so the sites I visit still no longer work.

So I would look into fixing your java.dll issue (or maybe reinstalling the MS JVM) before you upgrade to IE 6 sp 1. Unless you never go to a Java site. The choice is yours, but don't limit your future just to get better response with text input fields.

Becuse of legal problems, Microsoft no longer supports Java. So when you updated, Microsoft removed the Microsoft VM (java). However, it can still be downloaded from

I use the Sun Java and have no problems visiting any web sites, because of Sun Java. As a matter of fact, thats the one that Microsoft recommends as a replacement.

It's worth a try !

I have tried the suggestions above and none of them worked. Did anyone have any luck? I am still experiencing the same delays.It is almost impossible to use the internet.

That is exactly what I needed. And I hope that dreman can get his system working better. It really stinks having to wait just to type a message, or a login/pass.
