I am unable to download files from the internet. The "File Download" window opens and says "Getting File Information". But after some period of time, I can an error window with a white on red X that says "Internet Explorer cannot download xxx from xxx. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later."

This happens no matter what I try to download, so clearly I know the site is available and can be found.

Does anybody know what might be causing this problem?

Thank you very much.

Dan

In IE, Tools, Internet Options, General tab, click to 'Clear files' in the Temporary Internet Files section, including checking the box to delete offline content.

Test again. If no joy, create a new user, logon as the new user and try to download the same file again. If this succeeds, there is some corruption in your profile. This corruption could be in the Temporary Internet File structure itself. Logon in Safe Mode as Administrator. Using Windows Explorer, delete the folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\HISTORY"

Reboot the machine in normal mode and test again.

Troubleshoot Situations Where You Cannot Connect to Secure Web Sites by Using Internet Explorer in Windows XP

Make sure your options in IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Advanced are correct.

Uncheck the boxes for "Install on Demand" for IE and Other programs (two boxes).

Try running temporarily with the third box "Enable Third Party Browser Extensions" unchecked and see how this goes.

"This specifies that you want to disable features you installed for use with Internet Explorer that may have been created by companies other than Microsoft.
If you encounter problems with Internet Explorer that you cannot resolve, you can use this option to help determine if third-party features are causing the problems without uninstalling the feature. You must restart Internet Explorer after turning this option on or off."

If that stops your errors, you will know where the trouble is.

Is this your home machine or a machine at work? Lots of companies stop most staff from downloading, given the trouble with viruses etc. They are well within their rights to do this, and also you'll get spotted quite quickly if you to try to fiddle it.

If policy is blocking downloads the user would not get as far as he does above.

Likely all that needs to be done to resolve this issue is to delete the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension
