Is there a setting that I have missed that allows me to open a new tab that is an identical url as the old tab? Like cloning or duplicating a tab? I looked through the shortcuts but didn't see anything that sounded like what I am looking for. IE6 had that function and you can force Firefox to duplicate the address. Thanks.

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to do what you're after. Ctrl+N opens a new browser window with the same page, but Ctrl+T opens a new tab with either a blank page or your home page (depending on tab property settings). If you're good with the keyboard, or if you have a 3rd party keyboard macro type program, you can do: Alt+D, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+T, Alt+D, Ctrl+V, Enter

(But that's probably not very convenient)

Put the cursor in the address bar and press ctrl + enter
