Internet Explorer 7 address bar

Running latest version of IE 7 on XP pro. The drop down menu on address bar stays open for 1-2 seconds then the data (typed urls) disappears and is replaced with random characters (little squares) I have tried clearing everything and typing in the URL's over again. They are retained in the drop down menu but the menu goes blank after 1-2 seconds
