I'm working on a PII 350 with 64mb of RAM, win 98 first edition with all the windows updates.

My problem is with internet explorer. The pc was using IE 5 and then I upgraded it to 6 with sp 1. When ever I open IE it will not show up in the taskbar. When I minimize it, it completly disapears from the screen. You can use alt-tab open it again.

And every program that you open after it will not appear in the taskbar either. If you close IE all the other programs will show up in the taskbar.

I've tried repairing it. Uninstalling IE 6 and going back to IE 5. Nothing. I tried reinstalling IE 6 from a cd. Still same problem.

I have all unneccessary programs not being launched upon boot up, and the system runs perfect other than that.

The only other solution that I can think of is renameing the IE folder any reinstall from a CD.

If anyone can answer this problem YOU ARE DA MAN.

Internet Explorer and Windows98 are so delicately dependent on each other (oughta' be against the law!...of course the judge said it was)
Point is...an install where you write over the Win98 install may bring things around for you...it won't mess with your settings it will just overwrite/rearrange things...replacing possibly corrupt files with good copies...and you probably will be left with IE 5.5.
One that works.
Just pop in the CD and try it...you have very little to lose and much to gain considering your current predicament.

Left off some very important details...(you may or may not have been aware of)...make a boot disc from your machine...choose Startup Disc from Add/Remove Programs (if you don't have one)...boot up with it and do the install/writeover.

How do you choose install/writeover? Is there an option when you go through the installation process?

To do an "overwrite" install of Win98...make a boot disc with the method described above.
Before you use it access the disc and look at the Readme.txt that explains it.
What the Win98 boot disc does is to create a RAM drive...an environment to load the diagnostics utilities to the hard drive. The point of this is that the ram drive will take a temporary drive letter...pushing your CD drive letter down one...so IF your CD is now D drive it will become E drive.
(this temp partition is erased when you finish the process and reboot)
When the system boots with the floppy it will offer you a menu allowing you to load the CD drivers...which you'll need to do to use it for reinstalling.
So choose WITH CDROM support when you boot...then navigate to the CD by typing E:(hit enter) (when it stops at a:)
The system should respond (echo) with E: letting you know it's there...then you just type in setup(hit enter) and watch it work.
DO read the readme.txt on the floppy so you understand it better.
