Internet Explorer 6 causes a problem with Windows Explorer in Win98SE. The problems are twofold: -
1. Windows Explorer locks up when a large folder is deleted (i.e. not sent to the recycle bin) and sometimes a warning about low system resources appears.
2. On reverting to an earlier version of Internet Explorer (e.g. 5.5), the Windows Explorer lockup problem disappears but Outlook98 is found to be broken which reinstallation (of Outlook98) does not fix. Operating system reinstallation is then my only recourse.

I have encountered it on several Win98 machines. I presently therefore steer well clear of IE6 for Win98. Microsoft seems to be oblivious of the problem and continues to approve IE6 for Win98.

IE5.5 works just fine.

We have several hundred machines running Win 98 with IE6 and Outlook 98. Have not seen any of the symptoms described on any of our machines. All three components are coexisting without issue.

Resources may be the clue .

This is overkill I know , some information may not be relevant , but

To joegz: I have installed a number of Windows 98SE for home use and the problem has occurred on each. It must be my install procedure which is so straightforward that I am at a loss to see what is wrong.

To jmatt: Thanks for the URLs. I read them but have not yet drawn any conclusions. The resources issue is driving me into the arms of Win2000 since this is the BIG drawback of Win9X.

Thanks for your help.

Have you tried installing SP1 for IE6? Perhaps some of the resource conflicts might have been resolved.

If SP1 doesn't do anything for ya, try this on one of the pc's:

1) Uninstall IE6
2) Uninstall Outlook 98
3) Reboot
4) Reinstall IE6
5) Reboot
6) Apply SP1 to IE6
7) Reboot
8) Reinstall Outlook 98
9) Reboot

I know it sounds tedious and straight-forward, but believe me when I say that the order can make all the difference. That's also why I mentioned just to test this on one pc for now to see if it helps...

This is straight from Microsoft about IE6..

System Requirements

Posted: September 09, 2002

The recommended system configuration to use Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 is Microsoft Windows® 2000, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), or Microsoft Windows NT® on a computer running with a Pentium III processor and 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM. Below are the minimum requirements your computer needs to run Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1.

Additional system requirements are not required when running Windows XP. Some components may require additional system resources not outlined below.

I DON'T see Win98 in there anywhere as it is NOT a recommended OS for IE6/SP1 installation due to possible system conflicts..

Some people get lucky, some don't..

I have seen more running Win98 and installing IE6 that DON'T get lucky !!

Thank you Murray. I have gone the Win2000 route and that works more or less OK. I now have a puzzle about the vanishing IE desktop icon and the View->Source that doesn't work but at least IE6SP1 doesn't break the O.S.

Thanks guys. SP1 of IE6 was not available at the time of the problem which is no longer one because I have moved over to Win2000. Apart from a vanishing IE desktop icon and non-working View->Source, both of which I have accepted with a shrug, I am delighted with the change. I am only concerned with the vanishing icon in case it portends something more serious. The View->Source problem is a nuisance which Allaire/Macromedia Homesite helps to get round if I copy the page URL to the clipboard and then use Open from the Web, pasting the URL to the dialog box.
