Whenever I place phrases or keywords (i.e. microsoft, vista) in the search field they seem to be saved. So when I go back to the search field as soon as I begin to type "mic" anything that I entered into the field that matches those three letters appears mickey, microsoft vista etc.

Is there anyway to turn off this feature?

You can disable the Autocomplete.
Tools | Internet Options | Content tab
Clear the applicable checkboxes
