I keep getting IE 6.0 "Script Error" messages.
I disabled that box in advanced settings, but I still get
them.
Anyone know how to stop those irritating messages???

I think Jeff & Dan assume you are the developer of the web page. If so, then their advice is sound - debug your code and fix the errors.

If, however, you are an innocent viewer of a someone else's web page with script errors on it, there's nothing you can do, except turn off Javascript, which is probably NOT what you want to do. Depending on the situation, you could email the webmaster of the affected web site and notify them of the script error.

It's not your problem - it's the fault of the web developer.

Mike you are right, i'm not a developer, I'm just viewing
various webpages. It happens very frequently on many different websites. What would happen if I did turn off
javascript?

If you turn javascript, you wont be able to visit alot of sites or they wont completely load. Javascript is a webpage language alot of sites use. Therefore in turning it off alot of them will not load.

Since it happens frequently on many different sites, maybe your browser's javascript compiler is outdated. That's not personally my area of expertise, but tell us what browser (and operating system) you're using and somebody will have an idea.

Thats pretty recent. You can check to see if any updates or patches are available on microsofts update site. You will still get alot of times though those annoying little yellow javascript error in the bottom of the browser. But theres not a whole lot you can do about it for alot of the sites have them. So only thing I can say is just try to ignore the little yellow icon or even better suggestion use mozilla firefox. I personally use firefox now and only use internet explorer on sites that i absolutely have to mainly because firefox is alot more secure. Theres still a couple of glitches in it and a couple of weaknesses in it but overall its more secure. Anyways not trying to make light of your situation its just some people make mistakes when doing the coding others just dont care as long as it works and so you get the error alot. Just how the web works. Anyways if you have any further questions or still unsure about something please feel free to post as thats what were here for.

Sorry... yes, I was assuming you were the developer of the site.

The best bet would be to email the developers of the site, explain they have JavaScript errors, give them the URL, and hope they fix it.

The advice to use Firefox instead isn't really relevant here, IMHO, as if the JavaScript is buggy, it'll be buggy whatever browser you are using.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Well, at least in Firefox the errors don't get flashed in an alert-like box as the page loads. I know you can turn them off in IE - but I draw your attention to:
I disabled that box in advanced settings, but I still get them
Maybe we could look at this a little closer. Could you confirm that this option is indeed disabled (Tools>Internet Options>Advanced):
- Disable script debugging ON
- Display a notification about every script error OFF

Cheers,
Jeff

What is Javascript? faq216-6094

To determine if your computer's javascript interpreter is at fault (not current enough maybe) try to access a few of the websites from a computer that has Windows XP or at least Windows 2000. Maybe at a library or a friend's computer or an internet cafe. If you don't get the errors, it's the javascript intrepreter on your computer.

Win98 is getting pretty old now - I don't think MS even supports it any more. (This being almost 2006, that OS is 9 years old now. That's like 200 in OS-years.)

Web developers do make mistakes, but one typically doesn't find lots of glaring errors out there like you seem to be getting.

I've tried every different combination of checking and unchecking these boxes:
- Disable script debugging ON
- Display a notification about every script error OFF

It makes no difference at all.

On my new computer with XP pro and IE 6.0 sp2 I don't get
those script errors at all.
So, does that sound like it's probably the java script
interpreter? If so, is there a "fix" for that?

I've heard that fire fox is good and was thinking about
trying it...no problem having fire fox and IE on the same
computer??

Thanks

How about posting the URL of one or more of the sites that are erroring for you? That way, it'll be far easier to confirm whether the problem is with your PC or not, although I suspect it is not, that your PC is fine, and that you just happen to surf badly-written sites.

viewsonic and logitech are 2 major sites...problems with
both getting IE Script error messages on first page when
loading.
I just downloaded firefox...wonderful so far...no errors
and FAST (even with dial up on my old computer).
Too bad it won't work with one of my main business sites
(but ie seems to work ok there)...so I didn't really "fix"
anything, but the "band aid" seems to have cured my
problems :)
Thanks to everyone for the help!
