Internet Explorer 5.5 began to cause a fatal exception error whenever I shut it down (click X at top right hand side of screen.) I first noticed the same problem when closing down WinMX (a peer to peer file sharing program like Napster.) I totally un-installed WinMX, then noticed the same behavior when shutting down IE5.5. I have: run Scandisk(no fix), reinstalled IE 5.5.(no fix), Installed IE6.0(no fix), removed IE 6.0 and re-installed IE 5.5. There doesn't appear to be a way to completely remove all traces of IE before I run Scandisk, so I can get a completely fresh install. IE only allows you to revert to a previous version when uninstalling. The problem must be with IE, because Netscape works fine. IE works fine too, until I try to shut it down. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks in advance. MrPB

Try choice 2 .

W95 you have 3 choices . With W98 , if you have IE5.1 or higher & you
still have IE4 installed the following applies . No IE4 only 2 choices .
IE5.5 if over the top of 5.1 , offers 3 choices .

You can install IE5.1 straight over 4 . A big feature with IE5 is that
it can be repaired without uninstalling . Here is how to do it . Open
Control Panel , Add / Remove , click on Microsoft Internet Explorer ,
then click on add / remove down the bottom . This opens a window with
3 choices .

Choice 1. Add , insert your IE5 install program & you can find other
items you may not have installed 1st time .

Choice 2. Repair , fixes problems that may crop up with IE5 / Outlook

Choice 3. If unfixable , removes IE5 & goes back to IE4 , now if you
want to you can reinstall IE5 or a later version or another browser
altogether .

No Microsoft Internet Explorer in Control Panel !
Start > Run , key in msinfo32 and press Enter . Click on Tools > IE Repair Tool or Start >
Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information . Click on Tools > IE Repair Tool .

Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt:
Click Start , and then click Run .
In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK :
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
NOTE : This command is case sensitive.

W2000 > Start > Run
then enter exactly (case/space-sensitive)
rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance
this will give you the IE Repair dialog... proceed to repair IE

Repair IE6 .

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP (Q318378)

jmatt,

This looks like just what the doctor ordered. I'll print out your reply and then try choice 2. If that fails, I'll try IEradicator. I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks a million!

jmatt,

I was able to repair my IE5.5 as you described in choice 2.

Many Thanks,
MrPB

You're Welcome. The Strange thing is that I had used the repair tool when IE6.0 was installed, but it didn't help. Go figure!...
