Hi guy's just a quick question.

In IE6 sp1 when you cannot browse web pages but you can pull up an ip address instead what seems to be the issue? i can ping ip addresses but not web addresses. could it be winsocks or is it internet explorer issues?

just something i once knew but now seem to have forgotten

thanks in advance.

Luis.

If you can navigate by IP address, but not by domain name, this is strictly a DNS issue. Start by making sure your DNS servers are entered correctly (or picked up correctly by DHCP if applicable).

see a customer of mine had this issue but the only thing was that IE would pull up the page very slowly on the ip address and would get page cannot be displayed on the web address. The customer was using dial up. she could ping the ip but got cannot find host on web address.

*thanks for your reply smah, besides dns issue what else can it be (just IE ) or winsocks ? cause flushing the dns cache does not resolve the issue.

The DNS cache is only local. If the DNS settings were either entered wrong or being picked up wrong, this problem would happen even after flushing the local cache. Without knowing where the DNS info is coming from, I can only suggest that you manually set a known good dns server on that machine. If possible, use the DNS server from a different ISP.

How slow is 'very slowly'? Could this actually be a case of all the available bandwidth being consumed by something else - a virus perhaps?

no the customer's computer is virus free and i am her isp but the issue is that on our side everything is fine what else do you think it could be?

hey i appreciate this thank you.

It won't hurt anything to run the winsock fix, but if you can browse by IP address & doesn't by name it is a name resolution issue of some sort. Name resolution can come from several places (in order of likelyhood) - DNS, hosts file, WINS, lmhosts file. So if you're convinced that all DNS systems are in place & working properly, the next logical place to check is the hosts file.

thanks guys for all the good info. yeah the host file had gotten past me once again thanks.
