Internet connection very slow after installing service pack 1

I recently installed XP Pro on my machine and had everything working tip-top, then I did the automattic updates which included Service Pack 1 (if anything else was installed I wasn't aware of it, but I imagine there were several other updates). Since then my cable internet has slowed to a crawl.

I'm willing and ready to remove SP1, but thought I'd seek advice first.
