internet connection sharing

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if they know of a way to stop a terminal adapter dialing on it's own without users initiating the call, when I use modem sharing and I have enabled on demand dialing. The modem just keeps bringing up calls.

Who's Terminal Adapter are you using?

I've set up several different TAs to dial in only when needed, all of them were different.

The terminal adapter is a Hayes Accura 128K

When you have auto-dial enabled, watch out for "leech" applications hitting the internet to send and receive data. Examples would be Microsoft's "Critical Update Notification" or Symantec's Norton AntiVirus "LiveUpdate" which just go out to the net from time-to-time and check for updates.

Then there's spyware that sends data about your browsing habits. A freebie, "Ad-Aware" can help you find these and clean them out.

Other things may include NTP based clock synchronization, news weather and stock tickers, IM, and lots more.

Each one of these things decides to connect on its own, and if you're sharing a connection with auto-dialout, the system may do a lot of dialing for this kind of junk. You may not be aware that it's going on.

BTW, we have a cable line here, but we monitor the traffic to the internet all the time, and watch for exchanges taking place at unexpected times. Your modem dialing may be just a symptom of other problems. Howard Dingman
