Hi,

I have a desktop PC that gets its internet conenctivity from a Homechoice box via an RH45 ethernet cable.
Due to funky things with the Homechoice box and its built-in modem, it has been suggested to me that it would be best to get my 2 wireless enabled laptops to connect to the internet via the desktop PC using Internet Connection Sharing.
I am guessing that I can use my Netgear USB wireless adapter to broadcast out from the desktop to the 2 laptops (which have builtin wireless) ??
I fumbled along and created a new SSID using Windows wireless networking setup and a passkey etc and saved the config to a flash drive which Windows says to load onto each machine that needs to use it.
Once I did that I though that the laptops would be able to browse for wireless networks and see the new SSID that I setup ?
Am I doing something wrong here ?

Hi

Sounds like you were doing the right thing. If you are still have problems, my suggestion is to set it all up with no security for the time that you are working on it. ie One night. - once you can browse for your SSID and you can ping your PC and browse the Internet then start increasing your security step by step and testing as you go.

Disable SID (Broadcast)
Setup the MAC address table so only your laptops can use the wireless router.
Setup WPA security

This will stop most kiddy hackers or your neighbour from accessing your wireless router and your PC. Also consider tightning the security on your home PC - be sure to lose those "Everybody" shares, unless you secure them with NTFS permissions.

PS. If you have the secrets of Coca Cola or the KFC receipe on your PC then don't use wireless.

Good luck

Dave
