So, I got this free computer, basically just needed some ram, had windows 98 on it and I'm going to use it to watch movies/play music, video convference, etc. while I'm doing other stuff.

basically, it needs to connect to the internet.

when I first got it, everything was running fine, I put in my Proxim card after I installed drivers and I got a hot spot when I was at work, I un-installed all programs I could got everything hooked up for me, and then I decided to wipe windows 98. I put in the disk and re-installed. Wait, my settings are still there.

Format in DOS, install win 98 clean.

I installed all the drivers, making nessisary restarts, etc. I installed the drivers for my wi-fi card, and they went fine. Restarted, inserted the card after letting it boot up and went through the installation process. Since windows 98 doesn't have the connection thing like winXP does, the proxim card uses its own profile/client program in the system tray. IT SHOWS that the card is connected to the router, but I get a false 169.254... ip addy.

I can't get it to connect with the wireless no matter what, I can't download anything because IE4 is horrible and crashes to any site that I go to, including microsoft's. Firefox won't even install.

I can't access the router, I can't force the card through the router, via making the gateway 192.168.1.1 which is the router I'm using. I can't assign it an ip address to get internet access, it simply says "finding site: in the bottom bar of IE.

And to top it off, when I hook up a wired connection I can't update windows because they've stopped supporting it.

any suggestions?

thanks.

Can you connect to 192.168.1 with your browser? i.e
Are you sure that is your router address? Try 192.168.0.1

try pinging 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1 or even all the way through 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.255.253

what does winipcfg have to say?

Once you connect to the net OK 98 will update to the last update microsoft published before stopping support.

start , run, winipcfg to see what is setting up.
or start , programs, msdos, ipconfig
DHCP comes from start, settings, control panel, network, TCP properties, obtain automatically
