Using a cable modem connected to a D-link DI--604 4-port router. Router WAN line connected to modem, LAN1 my administrative computer (G3 300) and LAN2 connected to an iMac G3 350. Both computers can connect fine to the internet, but cannot "see" each other. What am I doing wrong? I need to do some file transfers.

This may seem so basic, but I haven't had to think back like this for quite some time. What needs to be enabled on each system to be seen. The TCP/IP setup uses connect via ethernet and configure using DHCP server.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Max

If you are using pre OSX....

You will need enable File sharing on each machine.
Got to the File Sharing control panel and start File sharing.

Get info on an item (HD, folder, file), and go to the sharing tab. Share it!

In Classic Mac OS remember to make Appletalk point to the Ethernet port, by default on many older macs it points to the printer port

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

1. Apple at top left of screen, Control Panels, Appletalk: make sure both machines are using Ethernet

2. Apple at top left of screen, Control Panels, File Sharing: start File sharing

3. Select any folder on a machine in the finder: Get Info, and share the folder.

4. Go to the other machine, Apple at top left of screen, Chooser, click the Appleshare icon...

and you should see the shared machine on the network

Regards
Duncan
