hi y'all.

I'm currently getting to grips with Linux and think it's great!
However my internet connection is beginning to bug me.
I dial a special free No. by freeserve, an english ISP, and I have got it to work before.
However, whatever I try in RHPP, and KPPP it says I have connected, I see bytes have been sent and received, but Netscape, Lynx etc all say there is no connection present, or that they cannot connect to the server I want???
Netscape says something about checking a SOCKS server...but it's beyond me.
I have tried loads of combinations of settings for my net connection, but none will let me use an explorer to connect to sites.
Pllllleeeeeeeease anyone help. All comments, and tips welcome!
thanks!

Hi,

There are a few tools in redhat - notably 'rp3' (gnome) & 'internet-config'. If it looks like its connected, open a xterm window and do '/sbin/ipconfig ppp0' (assuming its a modem you are using). When you connect the ISP validates your logon then sends dchp info to configure the interface. There can be delays between getting past the first hurdle and getting the interface to show its been configured with an IP address. Also, check whether freeserve configure your /etc/resolv.conf file dynamically with their dns servers. If not, you may just be getting a dns problem.

Socks is not relevant here - its a rather dated proxy type service. The netscape error message that refers to this just means it can't find the host and its suggesting that <maybe> you need to point it at a socks or other proxy server (e.g. if you were on a lan).

Have you seen --> .

Can you connect with Windows, is your modem a winmodem?

If you have a winmodem, you cannot connect using linux unless you use a network interface card to go dsl, or t1 or something of that sort, If you do have a winmodem(which made specifically so only windows can run on, ex: winbond)
then you might be able to buy a new dial up pci card, but make sure that it's not winmodem before you buy. An incompatible modem may let you think that you are connected, becasue linux will think it is, but there may be a conflict with the modem when sending info in linux over the net.

2. many free internet providers make you download software that is only for windows, and if you take the number, and enter it manually, it may try to detect the software, and if there is no software, it will kepp looking. So there is a connection in a way, but only for the FreeServe server to find your software before you connet, I tried the same thing with a NetZero number a while back.

But also consider what ifincham posted, it too, is a possible resolution.

Hi,

Hmmm .. good point - yes you could have problems if its a winmodem although some can be made to work. Let us know what the make & model of modem is.

I also found this example freeserve kppp config file you could compare to yours... it uses the 0845 number but I wouldn't imagine there's anything different between that and the unmetered number as far as config entries are comcerned.
