I am running a Dell 600 MHZ, Pentium 3 PC with a 56k dial up modem, ISP is AOL.

Originally I had Norton Anti Virus running system scan only.

I have recently upgraded to McAfee. The version I purchased was V 5.1.6 this has been updated via McAfee website to V 5.2.1 with the very latest dat files available.

However, since installing McAfee (even at system only scanning) I have noticed very poor internet speeds.

McAfee seems to have disabled my temp internet file settings, internet pages are no longer caching and I have no history etc. This is making browser extremely slow as every time I visit or re-visit a page McAfee checks the files again.

I have tried to re-set the the amount of disk space available but get a error message to set space between 0 and 1 MB - when I do this it will not let me ok it.

Any ideas before I uninstall McAfee and bin it?

There are 2 sets of caches. 1st is the memory cache. 2nd is the disk cache. And it is the disk cache that is creating your difficulty. Depending on what browser you are using, it probably is in an advanced setting for history. Ed Fair

Thanks Ed,

Solved the problem at the weekend. When I installed McAfee Anti Virus, I also installed McAfee 'Safe and Sound' backup utility to a 'safe' area of my C:\ drive.

I think that my c:\Windows\Temp Internet Files folder was added to the backup files list and the processor was trying to disk cache internet pages to two areas on my HDD. This was causing it to ignore the main cache, while trying to cache into a secondary area - resulting in a substantial slow down.

I uninstalled the 'safe and sound' utility and everything appears back to normal, inluding my original cache settings.

Thanks for your involvement.
