I am having continuous Internet connection problems, firstly getting a connection, when I eventually connect the connection drops out at random intervals. The event viewer lists the following problems.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Srv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 2012
Description:
While transmitting or receiving data, the server encountered a network error.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Dhcp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1002
Description:
The IP address lease 192.168.0.2 for the Network Card with network address xxxxxxxxxx has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.0.1 (The DHCP Server

sent a DHCPNACK message).

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Dhcp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1003
Description:
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address xxxxxxxxxx.

Do the above events indicate that my system is not correctly configured and if so what needs to be altered?

Are there any good Internet configuration Utilities preferably free, that would optimize the Internet settings?

I am running Windows XP SP2. The firewall is Zone Alarm which is configured to accept the router and adapter details, I have also switched off ZA and used the Windows Firewall and still get problems.

Sky Netgear Wireless Router Pt No dg834gt/dg834gtb (WPA security with channel set to avoid other wireless routers). Updated automatically by ISP

Netgear USB2.0 Wireless Adapter WG111v2 with latest drivers.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions

'WPA security with channel set to avoid other wireless routers'

What do you mean by that? You have set the channel to one in normal use in your country? (eg, 1, 6 or 11 in the UK).

Have you another wireless adapter you could try?

Have you tried resetting the security on the router (eg, remove it altogether - see if can connect ok. If so, put it back and try again. I have had problems with routers not allowing connections - and resetting the security has sometimes sorted it.

Thanks Wolluf

The other routers that show up are on channels 6 and 11, mine is on channel 1.

I have switched off the security on the router but still cannot connect.

I do not have another adapter to try.

The adapter icon in the system tray tells me that there is a connection to the router and the network icon shows a connection @ 54mbps with excellent signal strength.

If I unplug and re-insert the adapter I can usually get an Internet connection for a limited time.

Sometimes there is a compatibility issue between the router and adapter - ie both would work fine with another partner, but not together. I'm not expert enough to know why this happens (but have seen it a fair few times now), but usually just replace one or the other device to solve the problem (after trying resetting everything - see below - which has also sorted it sometimes - but sometimes nothing I've tried has got the connection up - although removed device always works in another situation). USB adapters are not expensive - might be worth buying another. Might also be worth totally resetting the router (ie, use the router reset button to wipe all current settings) and starting from scratch (if that is an option for you).

I have rebooted the Router on several occasions, this did help to a small extent.

At the moment I am following up on your suggestion of resetting the security. If that fails I will get another adapter and hope that works.

Thanks again.

As it is complaining about DHCP, this is your connection between device and router, without a doubt.

Now I'm not sure on all the devices, but can I suggest the following.

1. Is the Netgear using it's own connection tools, or are you using Windows Zero config. Try each one, prefered is Windows.
2. Can you set the speeds on each i.e, make sure all are set to 802.11g, ig that fails, try 802.11b.
3. try fixing your pc with a ststic address. try 192.168.0.50. It doesn't matter for now if the router is still set to dish out DHCP, it should start low down.
3. Check the router and/or device is not near:
Speakers
Flourescent Lighting
Microwave ovens
CRT's

Try those and see how you get on.

Thanks Stu

At the moment I have got some success by rebooting and switching the security off and on as wolluf recomended.

If this fails to cure the problem I will work thro' your suggestions.

Will report back later in the week.

As promised I am reporting back on my connection problems.

I had already asked the telephone company to check my line, they confirmed that the line was in good condition and was capable of supporting 8 megs.

First off I set up my router and adapter next to each other well away from sources of interference using the Netgear driver, this showed some small improvement for a short while.

Next I repeated the above with Windows Zero config., here again there was some improvement but not a total solution.

Whilst I had the telephone extension cable trailing thro' the house, I linked up the router on the Ethernet able directly to the computer.
This gave a rock solid connection for several hours as opposed constant dropouts on the wireless setup.

Since I only have a fixed desktop computer, I decided to buy a Devolo dLan 200 Homeplug mains wiring network kit. This has up to now proved to to be absolutely reliable.

Thank you both for your suggestions and help.
