I am trying to connect an external modem (USR 56K) to an NT 4.0 Server
(SP4 w/SBS 4.5)for internet access so a couple of users can check email.
The modem and dialup connection are working, except when I sign on to
the ISP, the modems communicate, status indicates that password
authentication is being checked, then the ISP disconnects!
I know the modem and cables work, because they were moved to a Win98
workstation and it works fine with the same settings and ISP.
Everything was setup through SBS and SP4 was also reinstalled.
Any hints on what the problem is are greatly appreciated.

Could be an authentication problem in that the server is sending the wrong user name and/or password for authentication to the ISP. If you are using Proxy Server, are the Auto dial settings correct for the ISP under the Proxy Server properties in the Microsoft Management Console? Can you access the Internet via the Server?

That's what I'm trying to do. On the Server, I'm trying to gain access to the internet. Once that is done, I plan to set-up a few users on network workstations.
It certainly looks like there is a problem with authentication of the username and/or password, but I have rechecked it about 10 times! As I mentioned, I set the account up on a workstation with direct dialup and it works fine! A note to the problem which may shed some light. After installing this modem, the next day users compained that their interoffice outlook email was not getting sent to recipients. In reality, Exchange Server was routing all mail out to the modem (which was not working). I decided to remove the modem (and associated settings), but when the Server was rebooted, nothing worked! Interoffice email, that is. RAS was also failing. I had to restore some data from tape, and reinstall some NT/SBS components. It got better, but still no office email. I then reinstalled the modem and dialup connection and interoffice email began to work again, but the same problem exists with internet access.

Looks authentication problem to me. Edit the phonebook entry of the ISP you are dialing and do the following:

In the "Security" tab, select "Accept any authtication including clear text".

In the "Server" tab, select TCP/IP protocol and use server assigned configuration, in case you haven't.

This should solve your problem, if it doesn't, quote the exact error number you receive.

To Mubashir:
You were so right! It was set to encrypted authentication. Changing it to accept any authentication allowed internet access. I then configured proxy server and exchange
server for email and the workstations connected just fine.
Thanks.
