Im not sure if this is the right forum.. but I am looking to get internet access without using comcast or dial up. What other options do I have? verizon dsl or vios is not available in my area yet.

Broadband ISPs vary by geographic location. You could check to see if Earthlink caters to your area. Also, check with the local telephone company and see if they offer DSL service. Other than that you could use Sprint or Verizon EVDO (mobile broadband) which is slower than DSL, but still a lot faster than dial-up.

I would be very careful about getting EVDO service. It is much slower than what is usually considered broadband, though it is several times faster than dialup. Unfortunately, since you are using cellular towers, and your flat-rate EVDO service is displacing customer calls that they bill on a per-minute basis, the wireless carriers don't like it. Sure, they sell it. They even advertise it as unlimited. But they do cap your monthly data transfer and once you have exceeded this "secret limit" they will cut you off. Don't get me wrong, EVDO is very handy to have if you travel and you can't find a wifi hotspot for your laptop. But I would never recommend it as a primary access method.

So your options will be pretty much the old (now) standards: cable modem or DSL. You can shop around for various providers, but they're both pretty much limited by where you live.
